His father is distraught, whereas his mother says that perhaps District 12 will have a victor: Katniss, indicating she has no expectations to ever see her youngest son again. Once he is reaped, he goes to the Justice Building where his family comes to visit him. For this, his mother gave him a black eye for being so clumsy. Katniss recognizes him instantly, knowing that he is the boy who, five years prior, purposely burned bread and gave it to her to save her family and herself from starvation - an act that gave her the hope and courage to feed her family.
